Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin said, "People's trust in the election system has been lost. It has become a big challenge for us to restore people's trust at the center. The big challenge now is to establish the belief that a fair election can be held in this country."
He made these remarks while talking to reporters after a view-sharing meeting with election officials at the office of the Rangpur Regional Election Officer on Saturday (August 9) morning.
The Chief Election Commissioner said, "People have actually forgotten the habit of going to the polling station. On polling day, I have a day off, I sleep—because even if I don't go, someone else will vote." There was such a mentality. Getting people to the polling station and bringing everyone to the polling station has become a big challenge.
In response to the question of what are the challenges in the election, CEC Nasir Uddin said, "I will talk about the visible challenges. First of all, law and order is a big challenge. Especially since the special situation that has arisen in the country since the July movement, the challenge is definitely law and order. Even then, I will say that the law and order situation has improved a lot after August 5 last year. Despite the law and order challenge, we can face it."
He said, there will be a change in the presiding and polling officers. It may not be possible to conduct elections with teachers everywhere. We are thinking of alternatives. Now, it will not be possible to import people from abroad to conduct elections. It will have to be done with the people of the country. Those people will have to be done here and there. Now we have to take them forward. We have had good elections in this country before. If people see that there is no rigging here, if people understand that they really want to conduct a good election, then they will see that the people are with you.
He also said, "The law and order situation has improved. I believe that the situation will improve further as the election date approaches. We, along with all the law enforcement agencies, want to create a situation where people can vote for their preferred candidates peacefully and without fear."
Describing the organization of fair elections as his religious duty, the Chief Election Commissioner said, "We are committed to the nation. I and my colleagues have taken this as a religious duty. My decision may go in favor or against someone. But it is not because of me, it is because of the law and regulations. As long as I am conscious, I will not support anyone but will work impartially."
Citing the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) and social media as a big problem, Nasir Uddin said, "AI or artificial intelligence has become more dangerous than weapons. The use of AI and social media is a big challenge for us. With artificial intelligence, statements are being made using pictures of people, which the common man cannot understand. When he gets time at night, he looks at the statements of the chief advisor Professor Yunus or me or various leaders on his mobile phone. He doesn't even know the person he is talking about, and the person who is talking is not real either."
He further said, "We are thinking about how to deal with this. When such news comes on social media, it gets shared one or two thousand times without any verification. The person whose information is shared gets 'twelve'.
