Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government, said that the youth must come forward to protect the country's biodiversity and environment. If the youth come forward, the entire country will join them.
He made these remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of the National Tree Plantation Campaign and Tree Fair on Wednesday.
He said, "In the July-August revolution last year, the youth united the nation against tyranny. The world has seen the strength and creativity of the youth of Bangladesh. To protect our lives and future generations, everyone must come forward to protect the environment. Everyone must refrain from destroying the environment."
The event, organized at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center in the capital, was presided over by Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Advisor to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. Members of the Advisory Council, secretaries and senior officials of various ministries, and heads of various environmental organizations participated in the event.
Urging everyone to come forward to prevent the eventual disaster, the Chief Advisor said, "Humans are responsible for the adverse effects on nature. Nature is taking revenge on us due to the misuse of plastic and environmentally destructive activities."
Dr. Muhammad Yunus said, "Humans are at war against nature and the environment. Yet it is our responsibility to protect nature and the environment for our lives."
He said, "Polyethylene is found 4 to 5 feet below the riverbed. This is very harmful to our biodiversity. We need to reduce the use of polythene or plastic. They are born but have no end."
Calling on citizens of all walks of life in the country, the Chief Advisor said, "We all need to come forward to protect the environment. We must refrain from self-destructive acts like environmental destruction."
