The United Kingdom is set to officially recognize Palestine as a state on Sunday. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to make the announcement this afternoon local time.
Starmer announced his intention to recognize Palestine as a state in July. He stated that the UK would recognize Palestine as a state if Israel did not agree to a long-term peace agreement through a ceasefire and a two-state solution.
There has been no progress on the ceasefire in Gaza. Instead, Israel launched a ground operation in Gaza City last week. It attacked the heart of the valley. Many residents were killed. Thousands of people are being forced to leave Gaza City and move to other areas.
The BBC report said that the UK's decision marks a major shift in its foreign policy, although the Israeli government, the families of the hostages and some right-wing organizations have strongly criticized the Starmer administration's decision.
Benjamin Netanyahu had previously said the UK's decision would reward terrorism, but British ministers argued it was a moral obligation to maintain hopes for a long-term peace deal.
AFP news agency reported that Portugal will also recognize Palestine as a state on Sunday. In addition, at least 10 countries will announce recognition in the coming days. In addition to the UK, France and Canada have announced that they will recognize Palestine as a state this month. France and Canada may recognize during the UN General Assembly. It is scheduled to begin this week in New York City, USA.
