The Israeli government has ordered the military to ‘halt operations to seize Gaza’, the country’s state-funded and army-run ‘Army Radio’ reported.
The Israeli government issued the order after Hamas announced its partial acceptance of the US peace plan to end the ongoing war in Gaza.
Army Radio reporter Doron Kados said that Israel’s ‘political circles’ have ordered the army to reduce military operations in Gaza to a ‘minimum’ level and take only ‘defensive measures’.
In a post on social media, Kados said, ‘This means in practice: the (Gaza City) occupation operation is stopped and has been suspended for the time being.’
The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office issued a statement today. Reuters says that after Hamas agreed to release all hostages in accordance with Trump's proposal, Israel is also preparing for the "immediate implementation" of the first phase of the plan, the statement said.
US President Donald Trump set a deadline for Hamas to accept his proposal on Friday. He said that the proposal must be accepted by 6 pm on Sunday, US local time. Otherwise, Hamas will have to "suffer the torment of hell."
A few hours later, the Palestine Liberation Organization announced in a statement that it had partially accepted the proposal. The statement said that Hamas is willing to release all hostages, both dead and alive. They demanded further discussions on some of the key conditions of the proposal.
Trump welcomed Hamas' decision. He also expressed hope that the Palestinian independence organization is ready for a lasting peace.
Earlier, the White House released President Trump's 20-point plan to end the war in Gaza on Monday. Then Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also agreed to it.
The plan calls for an "immediate" end to the fighting in Gaza. In addition, 20 living hostages must be returned within 72 hours. The remains of the dead hostages must be handed over. In exchange, Netanyahu's government will release "hundreds of Gaza residents" held in Israel.
