Dr. Yunus's London visit: Gaining political support will be important

Since taking office as the head of the interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus has visited nine countries, none of which were full-fledged bilateral visits. According to the plan, the head of government is scheduled to go to Malaysia on an 'official visit' next July. However, before that, Professor Yunus is going to visit the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom government has declared this visit as an 'official visit'.

Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government, is going to London on a four-day visit on June 9. The UK government has declared the visit an 'official visit'. The visit is quite important in garnering political support.

It is believed that Dhaka will raise the issue of bringing back the laundered money in the context of the presence of several people close to the previous government in the UK. On the other hand, the country may remind Dhaka that Britain had offered to buy four aircraft to Bangladesh during the previous government.

Government officials said that during his visit to London, Dr. Yunus will meet with King Charles III of the United Kingdom. And preparations are underway for a bilateral meeting of the Chief Adviser with Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Dr. Yunus will meet King Charles III at Buckingham Palace on June 12. The head of government is scheduled to receive the King Charles Harmony Award from King Charles III at St. James's Palace that afternoon. The Chief Adviser is scheduled to have a bilateral meeting with Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street on June 11. In addition, he is scheduled to participate in a dialogue organized by the UK's policy research institute Chatham House.

Diplomatic sources in Dhaka and London say that issues such as bringing back money laundered from Bangladesh, increasing investment and bilateral trade, and the Rohingya crisis may come up for discussion in the Yunus-Starmer meeting. However, it is believed that the issue of overall political support will be important. Where Dhaka will want the UK government to support various government initiatives, including reforms in Bangladesh's democratic transition, elections, and the trial of the July-August atrocities.

It is worth noting that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her younger sister Sheikh Rehana, Rehana's son Radwan Mujib Siddique Bobby and daughter Tulip Siddique, Azmina Siddique, former Land Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury and many others have been accused of laundering money from the country. Many of whom have information about buying property in the UK with the government. Those concerned can seek the help of the UK government to return the money laundered from the country, Dr. Yunus.

On the other hand, Britain may remind Dhaka that it had offered to buy four aircraft to Bangladesh during the previous government. Britain may urge the resumption of negotiations.

It may be recalled that during the previous government, a decision was made to buy 10 aircraft from the European company Airbus. Of these, there was a proposal to buy four aircraft from Britain. Discussions were underway between both sides regarding the British proposal. However, many decisions of the past have been stalled due to the political changes in Bangladesh.

A responsible government official said that the UK has declared the visit of the Chief Adviser to the Government as an official visit. The Chief Adviser is receiving the King Charles Harmony Award. He will receive the award from the hands of King Charles III. Last year, former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon received this award. Preparations are underway for a bilateral meeting of the Chief Adviser with Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The meeting will provide an opportunity to discuss various bilateral and multilateral issues.

Meanwhile, a diplomatic source in Dhaka has informed that British High Commissioner in Dhaka Sarah Cook will meet with the Foreign Affairs Advisor of the interim government Md. Towhid Hossain on Wednesday (June 4). The High Commissioner is expected to discuss in detail with Towhid Hossain about Dr. Yunus' visit.

The chief advisor is scheduled to return to Dhaka on the morning of June 14.

After the fall of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a student uprising, an interim government was formed in Bangladesh on August 8 last year under the leadership of Dr. Yunus. After taking charge as the chief advisor of this government, he attended the UN session in New York last September. Then in November, he attended the COP-29 conference in Azerbaijan as the chief advisor. Last December, Dr. Yunus visited Egypt to attend the D-8 conference.

In January this year, he attended the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting in Davos. Then in March, Dr. Yunus visited China. In April, he visited Thailand and most recently, the chief advisor attended the funeral of Pope Francis in Qatar and Vatican City.

Finally, the Head of Government visited Japan at the end of last month (May).
