A train derailed in Mexico, killing 13 people and injuring 98 others. Officials said a train carrying 250 passengers partially derailed in Mexico on Sunday (December 28) local time. AFP reported.
The Mexican Navy said the train's engine derailed while traveling in the southern state of Oaxaca. The navy initially reported 20 injuries. But a statement a few hours later announced that 98 people had been injured and, unfortunately, 13 had died.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she had ordered the chief of the navy and other senior officials to visit the scene and assist the families of the victims.
The country's attorney general's office said an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident. The train travels between the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean and is a passenger and freight train.
The railway line was inaugurated in 2023 as a major infrastructure project under then-President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to develop southeastern Mexico.
