Human metapneumovirus (HMPV), which has spread panic in neighboring countries including China, has now been detected in Bangladesh as well. Meanwhile, the Directorate General of Health Services has issued a warning regarding the spread of the virus in several neighboring countries. At the same time, 7-point instructions have been given to prevent the spread of the virus.
This warning was issued in a press release recently signed by Professor Dr. Md. Halimur Rashid, Line Director of the Disease Control Branch (CDC) of the Directorate General of Health Services.
The press release said that the outbreak of HMPV virus and the severity of the virus have increased alarmingly in various countries of the subcontinent, including China. The infection of this disease is especially common in children under 14 years of age and people 65 years of age and older. Along with this, there may be a high risk for people with long-term health problems such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems.
It said that like many other countries in the world, this disease is also seen in Bangladesh. With its recent emergence in China and other countries, it is necessary to control the infection in Bangladesh. For this, it is necessary to strengthen hygiene at all health care centers and points of entry. In this context, it is requested to follow the instructions given below to prevent the spread of this virus in Bangladesh and to increase health awareness among the people.
The guidelines for preventing infection are:
1. Use a mask to protect yourself from winter respiratory diseases.
2. Cover your nose and mouth with your elbow/arm/tissue when sneezing/coughing.
3. Immediately dispose of the used tissue in a covered trash can and wash your hands with hand sanitizer or soap and water.
4. Avoid contact with infected people and maintain a distance of at least 3 feet.
5. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or hand sanitizer (for at least 20 seconds).
6. Do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth with unclean hands.
7. If you have a fever, cough, or difficulty breathing, stay home until you recover. Contact the nearest hospital if necessary.
The press release further said that the Disease Control Branch of the Directorate General of Health Services is keeping a close watch on the situation. Human metapneumovirus causes flu-like symptoms like other respiratory diseases. Which usually get better within 2-5 days. So there is no need to panic. Everyone is requested to follow the health rules.
