US President Donald Trump has ordered two nuclear submarines to be relocated closer to Russia, angered by comments made by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
In a post on his social media account Truth Social on Friday, Trump said the submarines were being repositioned in response to "very provocative comments" made this week by former Russian President Medvedev.
Just a day earlier, Medvedev warned, "Trump should be aware of how dangerous the imaginary Dead Hand could be." He made the warning, essentially referring to Russia's Cold War-era nuclear weapons system.
It is worth noting that 'Dead Hand' is an automatic retaliatory nuclear weapons system that the Soviet Union developed in the 1980s. Its main purpose was to ensure that if the United States or an adversary destroyed Soviet leadership and command-and-control in a first strike, Russia would automatically take final revenge.
And Trump was angered by Medvedev's comments. He wrote on Truth Social, "I have ordered two nuclear submarines to be stationed in the appropriate locations. Those stupid and provocative comments are more than that."
The US president also wrote, "Words are very important and can often lead to unexpected consequences. I hope this is not one of those incidents."
Donald Trump has been embroiled in a heated war of words with Medvedev in recent weeks, who currently serves as deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council under Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Putin and Medvedev are known to be very close. Medvedev was the president of Russia from 2008 to 2012. Putin was the prime minister of Russia at that time. Later, in 2012, Putin returned to the presidency. Medvedev took over as prime minister. He held this position from 2012 to 2020.
Trump has frequently targeted Russia's "warmongering leader" Medvedev as he expresses his growing frustration over Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine. The two leaders have made comments that allude to their nuclear capabilities, as tensions between the two countries continue to rise.
