Several Indian film screenings have been temporarily suspended after a series of arson and shooting incidents at a cinema in the Canadian province of Ontario. The cinema, Film.ca in Oakville, said the attacks were aimed at screening South Asian films.
Following the attack, the screenings of Rishabh Shetty's 'Kantara: A Legend Chapter One' and Pawan Kalyan's 'They Call Him Oji' have been postponed. The cinema hall authorities have also said that they will not screen any Indian films until the situation normalises.
The first attack occurred in the early hours of September 25. At 5:20 a.m. local time, two men set fire to the entrance of the cinema using flammable materials. According to Halton police, the attackers used red gas canisters.
The attack caused moderate damage to the exterior of the cinema. CCTV footage shows a white SUV pulling up in front of the cinema at around 5:15 am and two men getting out, pouring liquid on the door and setting it on fire.
A week later, on October 2, the second attack occurred. This time at around 1:50 a.m., a suspect fired several rounds at the entrance to the cinema hall.
Although various media outlets have claimed that the attacks are linked to local separatists or Khalistani extremists, Halton police have not yet provided any specific information about the motive behind the attacks. Police are investigating the incident and are searching for suspects.
