The number of accounts with deposits of more than one crore taka in the country's banking sector is continuously increasing. In the three months from July to September this year, another 734 crore taka accounts were added. However, despite the increase in the number of accounts, the total deposits in these accounts have surprisingly decreased. Deposits from these accounts have decreased by 59 thousand 209 crore taka during the period under discussion. This information has been revealed in the recent updated report of Bangladesh Bank.
According to the central bank, at the end of June this year, there were 1 lakh 27 thousand 336 accounts with deposits of more than one crore taka. At the end of September, this number increased to 1 lakh 28 thousand 70. That is, the number of additional accounts increased by 734 in three months. But despite the increase in accounts, the deposits have decreased significantly. At the end of June, the total deposits in these accounts were 8 lakh 80 thousand 772 crore taka. At the end of September, it fell to 8 lakh 21 thousand 562 crore.
As a result, there was a decrease of 59 thousand 209 crore taka in three months. The trend of increasing accounts of one crore taka was also seen in the previous quarter (March-June). At the end of March, there were 1 lakh 21 thousand 362 such accounts, which increased to 1 lakh 27 thousand 336 by the end of June. That is, an increase of 5 thousand 974. On the other hand, the overall number of accounts in the banking sector has also increased. At the end of June, the total number of bank accounts was 16 crore 90 lakh 2 thousand 671. At the end of September, it increased to 17 crore 45 lakh 96 thousand 700. The total number of accounts increased by 55 lakh 94 thousand 29 in three months.
Long-term statistics show that the number of crore-taka accounts is increasing every year. In December 2023, there were 116,908 such accounts. In December 2024, it increased to 121,362. And by the end of September 2025, it stood at 128,070.
Bangladesh Bank officials said that having a bank account worth crores of taka does not mean that the person concerned is a millionaire. A large part of these accounts are created from multiple accounts of different institutions, government agencies and the same person or institution.
