At least 23 people have died in a massive fire at a popular nightclub in North Goa, India, local officials and state Chief Minister Pramod Sawant confirmed early Sunday (December 7).
A fire broke out at a club in the Arpora area of the state on Saturday midnight, killing several tourists, Indian news agency Press Trust of India (PTI) reported, citing local government officials.
State Chief Minister Pramod Sawant wrote in a post on social media, "Today is a very sad day for everyone in Goa. 23 people have lost their lives in a major fire in Arpora."
He wrote, 'I have inspected the scene. I have ordered an investigation into the incident. Strict action will be taken against those found responsible as per the law.'
Pramod Sawant told reporters at the scene that three people died of burns and the rest of them died of smoke inhalation. Three to four tourists were among the dead.
The fire is believed to have started at the club, Birch by Romeo Lane, in the early hours of the morning, PTI reported, citing police. ANI news agency reported that the fire has now been brought under control.
Goa Director General of Police Alok Kumar told ANI that the bodies of all the deceased have been recovered.
