Announcing his resignation from the Test captaincy, Shanto said, "I had an announcement that I am stepping down from the Test captaincy of the Bangladesh team. I do not want to continue as captain in the Test format."

Shanto said that he took this decision for the good of the team, "I want to give a clear message to everyone that this is not a personal matter. This decision was taken for the good of the team and I think it will be good for the team. My personal opinion is that the three captains can be a bit difficult. I have left here entirely for the good of the team."

Recently, the BCB removed Nazmul Hossain Shanto as the captain of the ODI format. Mehedi Hasan Miraj has been given the new responsibility in his place. Earlier, Shanto himself had given up the T20 captaincy to focus on batting. At that time, he also informed the board that he wanted to lead the Test and ODI teams. However, the BCB went ahead with the change of the ODI captain without informing him.

However, board president Aminul Islam Bulbul later said that Shanto's captaincy (ODI) was not taken away. Rather, the decision was made with the consent of everyone on the board. The board president even mentioned that Shanto himself accepted the decision with a sportsmanlike mentality.
