West Indies head coach Darren Sammy has been fined 15 percent of his match fee and given one demerit point by the ICC for his public outburst against TV umpire Adrian Holdstock during the Bridgetown Test against Australia.
Sammy questioned the decisions of South African umpire Holdstock at the end of the second day of the Test last Thursday. He even met match referee Javagal Srinath that day to seek an explanation about Holdstock's decision-making process.
Sammy said he had doubts about Holdstock's umpiring in the last three-match ODI series in England. Holdstock served as a TV umpire in two matches of that series and as an on-field umpire in the other.
Sammy was unhappy with two key decisions on the second day's play. One was the decision to declare West Indies captain Roston Chase LBW, and the other was the catch by Shai Hope.
Sammy's team believes that the ball bowled by Pat Cummins hit Chase's bat first. Chase, who was batting on 44, was given lbw by the on-field umpire and immediately took a review. TV umpire Holdstock said that there was a clear gap between the ball and the bat. Although no spike was visible on Ultra Edge, there were two small spikes nearby. Chase claims that the ball hit the bat.
There is also controversy over Hope's dismissal. The ball, which went inside Bo Webster, hit the edge of the bat and went behind the wicket, Alex Carey took it brilliantly. The ball was in Carey's hands. However, there is a question as to whether the ball touched the grass when he fell to the ground after taking the catch. TV umpire Holdstock ruled in Australia's favour here too. Sammy was seen expressing his disappointment in the dressing room.
Sammy, 41, said: "The issue surrounding this particular umpire (Holdstock) first came to my mind during the England tour. It's disappointing. You don't want to be in a situation where there are doubts about a particular umpire. But when one decision after another goes against the same team, then questions arise. I know he (Holdstock) is here for this series. But you don't want to play a Test match with such doubts."
Sammy was charged with breaching Article 2.7 of the ICC Code of Conduct for his comments, which prohibits public criticism of international matches, players or match officials.
This is Sammy's first 'offence' in the last 24 months. As per the rules, he has been given a fine along with a demerit point. Sammy accepted the punishment given by match referee Javagal Srinath. As a result, a formal hearing was not required.
West Indies captain Roston Chase also expressed his anger over the questionable decisions after the match, but no disciplinary action has been taken against him yet.
Adrian Holdstock will be the on-field umpire in the next two Tests between West Indies and Australia.
