It was a day of mourning. Just yesterday, countless students lost their lives in the Milestone tragedy. The Bangladesh cricket team took to the field today with that grief in mind. The mission was to win the T20 series for the first time by defeating Pakistan. Although Pakistan's Fahim Ashraf was stuck in that mission, in the end, victory came to Bangladesh. Liton Das' team won the series by defeating Pakistan by 8 runs with one match remaining.
Thrill, drama and heroism were all there at Sher-e-Bangla in Mirpur. Chasing a target of just 133 runs, Pakistan fought hard but lost by 8 runs. This victory in the second T20I sealed Bangladesh's series win. The red-greens, led by Liton Das, now lead the three-match series 2-0.
Bangladesh struggled to cope with the initial shock of batting after losing the toss. When they were in trouble after losing 4 wickets for 29 runs, Zaker Ali took charge. He played an effective innings of 55 runs off 48 balls. At the other end, Sheikh Mehedi Hasan played a stormy innings of 33 runs off 25 balls. The hosts somehow managed to put up a respectable 133 runs with the bat of these two.
Chasing a target of 134 runs, Pakistan's innings was chaotic from the start. They lost 5 wickets in the powerplay and were under pressure. Shariful Islam's excellent bowling (4-0-17-2) kept the match at one end. Sheikh Mehedi Hasan (4-0-25-2) and Tanzim Shakib also kept the pressure on Pakistan by taking wickets regularly.
When Pakistan looked certain to collapse at 47 for 7, all-rounder Faheem Ashraf took charge. He hit four fours and four sixes in an explosive innings of 51 runs off 31 balls. Along with him, Afridi and Daniyal combined to build up the fight. Needing 46 runs off the last 24 balls, it eventually came down to 13 runs off 6 balls.
But calm bowling from Rishad Hossain and Mustafizur Rahman eventually stopped Pakistan for 125 runs. Ahmed Daniyal, who shone on his T20 debut, was the last wicket out.
Zaker Ali was named Man of the Match in recognition of his responsible innings under pressure in Bangladesh's innings.
