Russia launched an all-out invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. This February marks three years since the war between Russia and Ukraine began. Republican Donald Trump took office as President of the United States a month ago.
However, he has been vocal about ending the conflict since before he took office as president. He has recently begun to take strong action on this issue, and the White House has said that the Russia-Ukraine conflict could end "this week."
This information was reported by the Anadolu news agency in a report on Sunday (February 23).
White House spokeswoman Carolyn Levitt said Saturday that US President Donald Trump is confident of negotiating a deal with Russia to end the conflict in Ukraine, suggesting the three-year war could end as soon as this week.
"President Trump and his team are very focused on continuing to negotiate with both sides of this war to end this conflict, and the president himself is very confident that we can get it done this week," Levitt told reporters on the South Lawn after returning from the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).
The comments from the White House spokesman came after Trump claimed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had “no options” and should be excluded from future peace talks with international leaders.
Levitt said US National Security Adviser Matt Waltz would be working 'day and night' to reach an agreement this weekend and noted that Treasury Secretary Scott Besant himself is continuing discussions on a proposed agreement with Ukraine on mineral use.
Spokeswoman Carolyn Levitt added, "These important minerals in Ukraine are an important part of the President's (Trump) agenda. This is very important to President Trump because it will bring back American tax dollars."
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has expressed hope that Ukraine will soon accept a proposed agreement on US investment in its mineral resources. He said he hopes that Ukraine will soon accept a proposed agreement on US investment in its mineral resources.
He even said the investment could offset some of the losses to the US defense budget. Asked by reporters in the Oval Office on Saturday about the potential deal, Trump said, "We hope to sign a deal in the very near future that will ensure that we get back $400 or $500 billion."
He added, "It's a big deal, but they (the Ukrainians) want it and this deal will keep us in that country. We'll get our money back. It should have been signed long before we proposed it."
The Trump administration recently proposed a rare earth mineral deal as part of broader talks to end the war in Ukraine. Ukraine is rich in natural resources, which are essential for the production of various products, including weapons and electric cars.
These resources are not available everywhere in the world and they are not easy to extract. Therefore, these resources are quite valuable. The natural resources that Ukraine has are also present in China. Therefore, the United States and the West have focused on Ukraine's resources to compete with China.
