Every year, thousands of students from different countries enter the United States on student visas, and many of them stay in the United States for long periods after completing their studies, research, and degrees. To control this issue, Trump is now seeking to impose a 'time limit' on all types of student visas.
Currently, students who hold F-1 visas do not have any time limit on their visas. They can stay in the United States for quite some time after completing their studies. Trump wants to abolish this rule and have each visa have a specific duration. That is, after the specified period of time expires, the visa will be canceled.
When Trump was president in his first term, he sent a bill to the US Congress in 2020. But since it was a presidential election year, the bill was not discussed much. It is not known what points were mentioned in the bill.
In a report, AFP reported that on Monday, the US Department of State sent Trump's proposal to impose a time limit on student visas in the form of a bill to the US Parliament Congress. It states that the duration of all types of student visas must be specified and if a student does not renew his visa after the expiration date, the student will be considered an illegal immigrant. In that case, the student will be identified as a criminal offender under US law.
During his 2024 presidential campaign, Trump promised to deport undocumented immigrants from the United States. Since taking office on January 20, 2025, he has been fulfilling that promise, and his administration has taken a tough stance on undocumented students as well as foreign students.
Trump recently withheld $2.2 billion in government funding from Harvard, one of the world's leading universities. He also offered to lift the freeze on government funding if the university stopped admitting foreign students.
Harvard University rejected his offer.
