A powerful earthquake has struck off the coast of the US state of Alaska. The magnitude of the quake was 7.3 on the Richter scale. A tsunami warning has been issued after the earthquake. The earthquake struck at 12:37 p.m. local time on Wednesday, ABC News reported.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) has confirmed this information.
The epicenter of the earthquake was about 54 miles (87 km) south of the city of Sand Point and had a relatively shallow depth of only 20.1 km. A tsunami warning was issued for southern Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula immediately after the earthquake.
The National Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska, said a tsunami was confirmed and some impact was expected.
The warning says the warning will be in effect along the Pacific coast of Alaska from Kennedy Entrance (40 miles southwest of the city of Homer) to Unimac Pass (80 miles northeast of Unalaska).
