US President Donald Trump has called on Southeast Asian countries Thailand and Cambodia to stop fighting, saying he had spoken with the leaders of the two countries and that both sides had agreed to hold peace talks soon.

President Donald Trump has called for a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia, ending the ongoing border conflict, the media reported. He said he had spoken with the leaders of the two countries and both sides agreed to hold peace talks soon.

"Both countries have agreed to enter into rapid talks aimed at a ceasefire and eventual peace," Trump wrote on Truth Social at the start of his visit to his private golf resort in Scotland on Saturday.

Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechachai also confirmed the ceasefire agreement. However, he said, "Thailand wants to see proof of sincerity from Cambodia in this regard."

At least 33 soldiers and civilians have been killed and thousands displaced since the border skirmishes began on July 24. Trump said the United States would not be able to continue trade talks with Cambodia and Thailand until the fighting stopped. But he expressed his willingness to return to talks once peace was achieved.

Trump made the statement ahead of the US's planned 36 percent tariff on imports from Thailand and Cambodia starting August 1. However, it is unclear how he got involved in the talks. Just a day earlier, Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiyampongsa had said, "We don't think there's a need for a third country to mediate right now."

Earlier, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed interest in mediating between Thailand and Cambodia. Earlier on Saturday, Cambodia called for a ceasefire and advocated a peaceful solution.

After playing at his Trump Turnberry Golf Resort, Trump said he had spoken with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and Thai Prime Minister Phumtham. He added, "I look forward to completing a trade deal with both countries when peace is restored."

Meanwhile, Thailand and Cambodia are blaming each other for the conflict. Thai authorities claim that the conflict began when Cambodia began monitoring Thai troops on the border with drones. On the other hand, Cambodia alleges that Thai troops advanced towards a Khmer-Hindu temple in violation of a previous agreement.

The border dispute between the two countries dates back more than a century. It began over the demarcation of the border after the French colonial period.
