Four people have been killed in a shooting in New York City, USA. One of the dead is a Bangladeshi. The deceased Bangladeshi was a police officer and worked for the New York Police Department.

The gunman is believed to have committed suicide, the Associated Press reported on Tuesday (July 29).

The news agency says that a gunman killed four people in a New York City office building on Monday local time. One of the dead was a New York Police Department officer on leave and a Bangladeshi citizen. Another person was seriously injured in the incident. The gunman later committed suicide, officials said.

The deceased police officer was identified as Didarul Islam, 36. He had been with the New York Police Department for three years and six months. His wife was pregnant and he had two young children. “He died as he lived — a hero,” said New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

Police have identified the gunman as Shane Tamura, a Las Vegas resident who has a history of mental health issues. It is not yet known what motivated him to carry out the attack.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said another person was seriously injured in the incident and was in critical condition. "Five innocent people were shot," he said.

Security camera footage showed a man getting out of a parked BMW and walking toward the building, armed with an M4 rifle. Upon entering the building, he opened fire on a police officer and shot a woman who was trying to take cover. He then opened fire indiscriminately in the lobby.

Police said the gunman then went to the elevator and shot a security guard hiding behind the security desk and another person in the lobby. He then went up to the 33rd floor of the building and shot and killed one person at a real estate firm before shooting himself.

Police said a rifle case, a revolver, bullets and magazines were recovered from the gunman's car.

New York Fire Department personnel responded to the Park Avenue office building at 6:30 p.m. local time on Monday after the incident, which houses some of the country's top financial institutions and the offices of the National Football League (NFL).

In the interview, a woman named Jessica Chen said she was attending a presentation on the second floor when she suddenly heard a series of gunshots from the ground floor. Later, everyone went to a conference room and pushed a table against the door.

"We were all very scared," Jessica said, adding that she sent her parents messages expressing her love.

Local TV footage showed people leaving the building with their hands raised. The building houses Blackstone and the Consulate General of Ireland. The police commissioner said two New York Police Department units were on extra duty at the building, which had been privately hired to provide security.

The city's emergency management department issued warnings of traffic congestion, road closures and public transportation disruptions in the area after the incident.
