Bangladesh Bank made a huge profit in the 2024-25 fiscal year due to interest income from lending money to the government and banks and the exchange rate of the dollar. In the last fiscal year, Bangladesh Bank made a total profit of Tk 33,000 crore. However, the net or actual profit was Tk 22,600 crore.
The board of directors of Bangladesh Bank approved the financial statements of the last fiscal year at a meeting held on Tuesday. The meeting, chaired by Governor Ahsan H. Manusar, was attended by the directors of the organization. The board of directors approved an incentive bonus of six times the basic salary of the central bank officials.
It is known that despite the economic recession, the central bank's debt management activities were vigorous. Due to low revenue, the government borrowed more money from Bangladesh Bank. Again, the banks also borrowed more money from Bangladesh Bank than before. As a result, the central bank earned more interest. Again, since the reserve money was invested in different countries of the world, it also made good profits from there. As a result, the central bank's profits increased.
According to Bangladesh Bank sources, Bangladesh Bank has already deposited Tk 8,000 crore of the profit into the government's account. The remaining amount will be deposited into the government's account after the auditor and governor sign the accounts on Wednesday.
Bank officials say that when the economy is strong, the central bank makes less profit. And when the economy is in a recession, the central bank makes more profit. This has been happening for a long time. The situation is similar for central banks in other countries.
According to Bangladesh Bank sources, the central bank made an actual profit of about 40,000 crore taka in the 2023-24 fiscal year. Of this, the net profit was 15,300 crore taka. Accordingly, the net profit increased by about 7,300 crore taka in just one year.
Bangladesh Bank Deputy Governor Habibur Rahman told that the local currency has generated more profit than the reserve investment. A portion of the profit has already been deposited in the government's account. The remaining amount will be deposited this week.
