The government has decided to privatize the Department of Postal Services' mobile financial services (MFS) Nagad. A notification will be issued within the next week to find investors for the company, said Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H. Mansur.
The Governor made this information while speaking as the chief guest at the 'Cashless Bangladesh Summit 2025' jointly organized by ICMAB and MasterCard at Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka on Wednesday.
Ahsan H. Mansur said, "When it comes to MFS, unfortunately we still have only one big institution. We need to create more activities, competition, and new investments in this sector. For this reason, it has been decided to give Nagad to the private sector and bring in investment."
The governor said Nagad will be taken out of the control of the Postal Department. He said they currently do not have the capacity to operate the service. A technology company should be brought in as a major shareholder in Nagad.
The Governor further said that major reforms have already been made in Nagad. The problems related to various irregularities related to EOC due to the previous owners have been resolved. About 15 million fake or invalid accounts have been eliminated and the institution is on the path of restructuring.
However, Ahsan H. Mansur, mentioning the need for strategic investors to invest in the technology sector, said, "Now we need an institution like bKash that can invest in Nagad step by step, holding shares. Hopefully, it will be possible to revive Nagad as a worthy competitor."
Governor Ahsan H. Mansur expressed hope that Nagad can be revived as a worthy competitor.
National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Md. Abdur Rahman Khan, Finance Secretary Khairuzzaman Majumder, City Bank PLC Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Masrur Arefin, among others, also spoke at the event.
