Finance Advisor Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed said that a proposal to purchase 40,000 body-worn cameras (bodycams) for the police to strengthen security at polling stations during the national elections to be held in February has been approved. He told reporters after a meeting of the Advisory Council Committee on Government Procurement at the Secretariat on Tuesday.
The Finance Advisor said that a proposal to purchase 40,000 body-worn cameras for the police has been approved. These cameras will be purchased through UNDP. He did not specify how much it will cost, but said that it will cost several hundred crores of taka.
Earlier, on August 9, a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus at the state guest house Jamuna in the capital discussed the purchase of body-worn cameras. The next day, a post on the Chief Advisor's verified Facebook page quickly announced the purchase of these cameras.
The post said that Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor Khoda Baks Chowdhury and Faiz Ahmed Tayyab were present at the meeting.
At that time, Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus ordered the rapid purchase of bodycams and the provision of proper training for thousands of police officers.
Faiz Ahmed Tayyab said the process of procuring 40,000 body cameras (commonly known as bodycams) is in the final stages. These devices will strengthen security at thousands of vulnerable polling stations.
