13,528 metric tons of coarse rice have been imported from India through 145 consignments through Benapole land port. This rice was imported in 395 trucks from August 21 to November 18. The rice consignment was unloaded after entering Shed No. 31 of the port.
To keep the rice market stable in the country, the government allowed traders to import rice through various ports. In continuation of this, rice import from India started through Benapole land port on August 21.
According to port sources, 1,260 metric tons of rice were imported from India to Bangladesh through Benapole Port in August, 5,435 metric tons in September, 5,188 metric tons in October, and 1,645 metric tons in November.
Five C&F agents have submitted documents to customs for the clearance of imported rice from Benapole Port.
Bablur Rahman, representative of C&F agent Messrs. Bhuiyan Enterprise, said, "We have been working to clear rice at the customs house since the beginning of rice import. After 4 months, rice import from India through Benapole port started again on August 21. We have cleared most of the rice imported."
Ziaur Rahman, general secretary of the Benapole Port Importers-Exporters Association, said that since rice imports started through Benapole on August 21, prices have decreased somewhat in the wholesale and retail markets. If imports continue like this, the price of rice in the market will decrease further.
Shyamal Kumar Nath, Deputy Assistant Officer of the Plant Quarantine Center at Benapole Port, said that 13,528 metric tons of coarse rice have been imported from India through 145 consignments and 395 trucks through Benapole Port. Arrangements have been made to quickly unload the imported rice consignments.
