Financial sector regulator Bangladesh Bank is suspending all types of counter services, including the sale of savings certificates and prize bonds, exchange of torn notes and automated invoices. These customer services will be suspended simultaneously from all offices, including Motijheel, from Sunday (November 23).
However, it has been decided to increase supervision to ensure that commercial banks provide services without any disruption. The central bank has taken this decision considering security issues as a KPI-listed institution.
Bangladesh Bank said that no other place in the world provides such services directly to the general public from the central bank counter. As a KPI-listed institution, it has been decided to stop customer-related services considering security issues.
Incidentally, it was initially decided to stop these services from Bangladesh Bank's Motijheel office and later from other offices on November 30. However, the central bank later decided to bring forward the time and stop direct customer service at all offices simultaneously.
It is worth noting that until now, these customer-related services were provided from the central bank's offices in the capital, Sadarghat, Chittagong, Khulna, Barisal, Rangpur, Bogra, Rajshahi and Sylhet, in addition to the Motijheel office.
