The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Executive Board will present a proposal to release the fourth and fifth installments of the loan in favor of Bangladesh in today's (Bangladesh time) meeting. Sources said that Bangladesh's proposal may be approved in the meeting. If this proposal is approved, the IMF will release the money and deposit it in the account of Bangladesh Bank within the next few days. At the same time, Bangladesh will receive the money. This will increase the country's foreign exchange reserves. This time, Bangladesh may receive $1.3 billion from the IMF in two installments. Earlier, it received $2.31 billion in three installments. The meeting is scheduled to be held at the IMF headquarters in Washington, the capital of the United States.

The issue of debt relief had been pending since December last year due to non-compliance with IMF conditions. Both sides were negotiating. But neither side completely backed out of the agreement. Finally, an agreement was reached between the two sides in May. In light of this, the IMF announced that it would present the proposal for two installments of the loan relief at its executive board meeting.

As a condition for this money release, the central bank has left the dollar exchange rate completely to the market. But since then the market has been normal. However, the dollar price has increased slightly. Steps have been taken to increase revenue. Extensive reforms have been brought to the National Board of Revenue or NBR. There is a condition to reduce subsidies. The government is reducing it somewhat. Long-term reform plans have been taken for the banking sector. They have been communicated to the IMF. There was a condition to increase electricity prices. But considering that the inflation rate will increase, the financial advisor announced in the budget speech that the electricity price will not be increased for the time being. According to the IMF's conditions, a strict monetary policy will have to be followed until the inflation rate comes down to a tolerable level. This means that the interest rate on loans will have to be increased to reduce the flow of money. But in the post-budget press conference, the Governor of Bangladesh Bank announced that the inflation rate will come down to 6 percent by September. Then the interest rate will also be reduced.

The ousted Awami League government sought loan assistance from the IMF in 2022 to help it deal with the global recession. On January 31, 2023, the IMF approved a $4.7 billion loan proposal for Bangladesh, imposing strict conditions. The first installment of the loan was released on the first day of February of that year.
