The Finance Ministry has called on everyone to join the work, saying that the ongoing crisis with the National Board of Revenue (NBR) will be resolved through discussions. The call was made in a press release signed by Finance Ministry Public Relations Officer Gazi Towhidul Islam on Wednesday.

The Financial Advisor has called a meeting with representatives of the NBR, BCS (Tax) and BCS (Customs and VAT) cadres at 5 pm on Thursday. Meanwhile, NBR officials and employees have been observing a sit-in and strike since last Monday demanding the resignation of the chairman.

The release said that for a long time, civil society, business organizations, economists and development partners of the country have been suggesting the separation of revenue policy and implementation work to increase the efficiency of revenue operations. Realizing the importance of the issue, the current interim government formed an advisory committee on National Board of Revenue reform on October 9.

After reviewing the report submitted by the said advisory committee, the Advisory Council gave in-principle approval on January 16 to separate the two activities of revenue collection and revenue policy formulation after implementing the formulated policy. Later, the officers of BCS (Customs and Excise) and BCS (Tax) cadres, under the supervision of the leaders of their respective associations, discussed with other stakeholders and formulated the draft of the Revenue Policy and Revenue Management Ordinance, 2025 and submitted it to the Chairman of the National Board of Revenue in the first week of March. The draft of the submitted ordinance was promulgated in a revised form on May 12 with the approval of the President.

After the ordinance was issued, the officials and employees of the National Board of Revenue started a movement demanding the repeal of the ordinance. On May 20, an hour-long meeting was held under the chairmanship of the Financial Advisor and attended by 13 representatives of the NBR Reform Unity Council.

The meeting decided that the ordinance would be implemented after necessary amendments were made to the issued ordinance after discussions with all stakeholders, including the Revenue Reform Committee. On May 25, the Office of the Financial Advisor issued a press release informing the protesters that the ordinance would be amended by July 31.

Meanwhile, since the movement started again on June 22 under the banner of the NBR Reform Unity Council, the Financial Advisor has called on representatives of the BCS (Tax) and BCS (Customs and Excise) cadres to hold discussions with him on June 26 at 5 pm.

The government hopes that all misunderstandings will be resolved through this discussion. Based on everyone's consensus, it will be possible to bring the necessary amendments to the issued ordinance by July 31. The Financial Advisor is requesting all the officers and employees of the National Board of Revenue to stay in their respective offices and concentrate on revenue collection activities during the last working days of the fiscal year.
