The first day of the second round of three-day tariff talks between Bangladesh and the United States ended a few hours ago in Washington, DC.
A message sent by the Chief Advisor's press wing said that the discussions were very broad, covering almost all important aspects of trade relations between the two countries.
Commerce Advisor Sheikh Bashiruddin led the Bangladesh delegation in Washington DC. National Security Advisor Dr. Khalilur Rahman, Special Assistant to the Principal Advisor on ICT and Telecommunications Faiz Ahmed Tayyab joined the discussions virtually from Dhaka. Senior officials of the Commerce Ministry were also present at the meeting in the US capital.
Senior US officials from agriculture, energy, trade and copyright agencies also attended the meeting.
The two sides will resume their meeting at 9pm Bangladesh time on Thursday. The talks will continue on Friday.
On July 8, US President Donald Trump announced the imposition of a 35 percent tariff on Bangladeshi goods in the United States. He also sent a letter to Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government of Bangladesh, explaining the reasons for this decision, which will take effect from August 1. Following Trump's letter, Dhaka and Washington held discussions on the issue.
