Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General (retd) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has said that the Awami League's allies are trying to destabilize the country. He said the government will resist this at any cost.
The Home Affairs Advisor made these remarks at an emergency press conference on the law and order situation in the country at his residence at Baridhara DOHS in the capital around 3 am on Sunday.
Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said, "The Awami League's allies are trying in every way to destabilize the country. They are using a lot of money taken out of the country for this purpose. The government will not allow this to happen under any circumstances. It will be prevented in any way."
Stating that the law enforcement agencies have been instructed to increase patrolling activities, the advisor said, "They will take measures from tomorrow, Monday, to ensure that no crime is committed anywhere. And if the law enforcement agencies cannot implement this instruction, action will be taken against them as well. The law and order situation will improve day by day. There is no possibility of deterioration."
In response to the question of why unpleasant incidents are happening across the country, but the criminals are not being arrested, Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said, "Arrests are being made. However, the number of arrests that should be made may not be as high as they should be. For example, three people have already been arrested from Savar for robbery on a bus. Arrests are being made and will continue."
At that time, questions were asked about the demand for the resignation of the Home Affairs Advisor. A journalist asked, "Your resignation was demanded some time ago. Students have held protest marches and rallies in the Dhaka University area. They have set a deadline of tomorrow noon for your resignation. Has this matter come to your attention?"
In response, Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said, "If I can improve the reasons why they asked me to resign, then there is no question of resigning. They want the law and order situation to improve. I am making arrangements for the law and order situation to improve. The law and order situation has improved a lot from before and it will continue to improve."
A journalist present at the press conference asked, "Students—especially female students—are saying that when the Home Affairs Advisor and the Law Advisor took charge, they should have thought about the safety of women first. They are concerned about the increasing number of rapes and they are saying that no initiative has been taken by the Home Affairs and Law Ministries. What can you say to them?"
In response to this question, the advisor said, "I will tell them, my mother and sisters have no reason to fear. We are always concerned about them and we are always vigilant to ensure that they do not face any kind of problem. The law enforcement agencies are also always vigilant in this regard."
