Delhi Police has detained Congress leader Rahul Gandhi from a protest march against alleged electoral fraud. Rahul's sister Priyanka Gandhi and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut were also detained, NDTV reported.
The protest march was organised by the opposition alliance 'India Bloc', alleging that the Election Commission colluded with Narendra Modi's party BJP to rig the elections. Rahul told reporters while being detained on Monday morning, "This fight is not political, it is a fight to protect the constitution. This fight is for the people's right to vote."
Delhi Police Joint Commissioner Deepak Purohit confirmed the arrest of Rahul. However, he did not say how many people were arrested in total. He only said that the arrested people were taken to a police station near the rally venue.
Deepak Purohit said that the opposition party was not allowed to hold a large-scale protest rally. It was said that a group of 30 MPs would go to the Election Commission and submit a complaint.
News agency ANI reported that Trinamool Congress leader Sagarika Ghosh was also among those arrested. They were taken to Parliament Street police station. Priyanka Gandhi, addressing the government during the arrest, said, "They are afraid." Earlier, during the march towards the Election Commission, India Bloc leaders chanted slogans of "vote thief, vote thief."
