Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been in a corner in the country's politics for a long time. There are demands for his resignation from not only the opposition but also from within the party. In such a situation, it is being heard that the Canadian Prime Minister is going to resign.
He may make that announcement again by Monday (January 6). This information was brought to light in a report by the Canadian media outlet Globe and Mail, citing several sources, according to a report by the news agency Reuters.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to announce his resignation as leader of the Liberal Party by Monday, The Globe and Mail reported on Sunday, citing three sources.
Sources told the Globe and Mail they don't know for sure when Trudeau will announce his plans to leave, but they expect him to announce his resignation before a major national caucus meeting on Wednesday.
The Canadian Prime Minister's Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The Globe and Mail report also said that it is not yet clear whether Trudeau will leave his post immediately or remain as prime minister until a new leader is elected. Trudeau took over as leader of the Liberal Party in 2013. At the time, the Canadian party was in deep trouble and had fallen to third place in the House of Commons for the first time.
Reuters says Trudeau's possible resignation would leave the country's ruling party without a permanent leader at a time when polls show the Liberals will lose badly to the Conservatives in the election to be held in late October this year.
However, Trudeau's resignation is also likely to lead to calls for early elections to form a new government.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Trudeau has also discussed with Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc whether he is willing to take on the role of interim leader and prime minister, a source told the Canadian newspaper.
