The country's government has pardoned another 75 Bangladeshis who were arrested for protesting in the United Arab Emirates in solidarity with the anti-discrimination student movement. The UAE has released a total of 188 people under amnesty.
This information was confirmed to Dhaka Post on Friday (November 29) by Private Secretary of Expatriate Welfare Adviser Md. Sarwar Alam
He said that no Bangladeshis have been arrested in the Emirates on this issue.
Earlier in the afternoon, Sarwar Alam wrote on Facebook in a post, "Today, the Emirates government pardoned 75 more expatriate Bangladeshis who were arrested for marching and protesting in the United Arab Emirates against the killing and persecution of students in July-August 2024." The Emirates government has released a total of 188 people so far in this incident.
Earlier, in a briefing on September 3, Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said that the President of the United Arab Emirates had a telephone conversation with the Chief Adviser on August 28. There was a major issue of waiving the punishment of 57 Bangladeshis. The Chief Adviser urged the President to pardon the migrant workers. The president kept his word. The chief adviser received this good news.
It should be noted that 57 Bangladeshis were sentenced to imprisonment for different terms for protesting in the United Arab Emirates in solidarity with the quota reform movement. Three of them were sentenced to life imprisonment, 53 to 10 years and one to 11 years.
